We will be studying significant members of the African American community and how they have impacted/shaped our world today. This will honor Black History Month. Our goal on the writing end of this activity is to get the student's writing 3-4 sentences about the significant member of this community and a few facts that they have learned. Math- We are still studying a combination of addition and subtraction. Students will be asked to find the missing addend of a number sentence. They will also be challenged to create their own word problems when a number sentence is given to them. Students will continue to practice identifying whether a word problem is asking for addition or subtraction. They will also continue learning how to relate addition and subtraction to one another. As you are practicing at home, please make sure your student is placing the correct symbol (+ or -) in the number sentence. Also making sure in subtraction the biggest number comes first. A School-Wide Behavior Plan Update...PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) School Initiative- This week our school introduced the PBIS framework to students. It is a system that focuses on rewarding positive behavior rather than reprimanding students for negative behaviors. The hope is that all students will want to be rewarded, therefore they will always do the right thing. You may have noticed that clip charts in classrooms have gone away with this new initiative. Instead of focusing on clip ups and downs, students will now be earning horseshoes for following the "Colt's Code". The Colt's Code is promising to be responsible, respectful and safe in the classroom, cafeteria, bathroom and playground. Students can earn individual horseshoes (blue) which are worth one point each, while whole classes can earn horseshoes (green) which are worth 10 points each. Teachers can hand out blue horse shoes to any student in the school. Green horse shoes are given to classes by other teachers/administrators, classroom teachers can not give their own class green horse shoes. Each classroom has different benchmark goals they are trying to reach to earn a reward. For example: 100 pts: 10 mins extra recess 200 pts: dance party 300 pts: PJ Day etc. Blue horseshoes will be totaled at the end of each week and will go towards a grade level total. At the end of each quarter there will be a grade level winner, and the school will celebrate that grade level. There will also be random ticket count days where administration will hand out a small treat to students who have earned a certain number of blue horse shoes so far that week. We are hoping this initiative will help boost moral in the building and keep everyone focused on the great behaviors that are always present in the school. Please reach out to your classroom teacher with any questions about the program. Upcoming Events and Reminders...Yearbook Pre-Ordering- Pre-Order your year book now! They are on sale for $16.
